I don't know protocall for getting started at this forum, so I thought it might be useful to introduce myself. I have been lurking here a while and only started to join in the conversations. I hope this is not sounding too silly.

So, the short version is I have played guitar for nearly 40 years just for fun. 15 years ago I started making furniture with mostly hand tools as a hobby. I love wood. I recently learned that there is kind of renaissance occuring where people actually make guitars themselves and with forums like this one to help, ordinary folks like me might be able to do the same. I live in Illinois with my family and work in Chicago. In my years of making stuff, I've learned a few things myself and hope I can make a contribution as well as learn enough to make my own guitars. Cheers everone. Steve Courtright

Welcome, Steve

You're going to like the OLF. Your playing and woodworking experience sounds pretty much like mine. I've completed one guitar (took me 6 months, after building tools and jigs) and it came out very nice. I'm currentlly building two just alike for my sons. This forum will certainly help you along.    Very few of us think any question is silly so ask away and keep us posted with your progress, including pictures.    Good to have you.

Thanks all! Looking forward to gettin' my hands dirty and posting guitar pics.

Since I haven't started my first guitar yet my only pics are of my furniture. Here is something I finished recently for the bedside. Cherry and lacewood. Oil and Wax finish. The colors evened out nicely, yep I used different planks (oops), after being in the sun for a few weeks.

Welcome Steve! Ooooh, our British contingent are going to love your finish on that lovely nightstand. (And nice looking wood, too.)
What might start afflicting you is the desire to dismantle your furniture and turn it into guitars. For instance, those side slats---how wide are they?

Welcome, Steve!

One of the crossover benefits of lutherie is that you'll start adding purfling and mother of pearl initials to your furniture!
