This is more wood than lutherie related, but I'm sure I can get some good advice here.

A couple of days ago I hauled out a small log (24" in length and 16" in diameter) from a Ponderosa pine tree forest in South Dakota. I'd like to use it as a simple chair and don't want the nice orange/brown bark to fall off. I think it was cut last fall and the ends are checked already...fine with me, but I'd like to prevent further decay.

Also...there are some signs of surface fungus on the end grain. Will this eventually permeate the whole log. Can I do anything to prevent this?

Thanks all!

Greg
