I am making my first guitar using Cumpiano's book. I just finished shaping the neck and headpiece and was wondering whether I had done something wrong along the way because the position of the scarf joint on the back of the head piece makes it so visible. Any thoughts? |

Put a thin veneer on the back, and the problem goes away. When I make scarf joint necks, I try to carve my transition from shaft to head right on the joint. That way the glue line is hidden. Al |

By the way, don't worry about the glueline on the sides of the neck. They are always visible with this type of construction. Al |

There is nothing wrong with the method of construction being visible, if it's a nice tight glue line then the honesty of showing it off can only be applauded. Those uber-luthiers like Joshua French that use a V-joint for the neck joint often use veneer overlays to specifically highlight the joint. Colin |
