Like our good friend Serge, I too want to build a buffing station. Have everything already except the pulley,belt and the double ended mandrels.
anyone know of a good source online to get them?

No Peter, the shaft is just a 1/2" steel rod you can surely purchase at either Ace hardware or the BORG and the pillow block bearings at a specialized bearing store who sells JKS bearings or other brands, not sure if Busy Bee woukd carry them, maybe someone from the USA would have a better answer on where to find the pillow block bearings...

Hoping this helps more but you shouldn't have too much problems finding them!

I think this place was in a post here in the past, but I thought I'd put it up again. They have kits in various stages of completeness. Might save some time and effort.

I've seen pillow blocks at Rural King. I think that I'll try to find a larger dia. shaft for mine. Serge have you noticed any deflection or vibration on yours?

I found the pillow blocks online, now need to find a 3/4" shaft with threaded ends and the pulleys.

You may be able to find the flange assemblies that slip onto the shaft then attach with setscrews Keep in mind that the left side should have reverse threads to keep the retaining nut from loosening under load.

Al, yes, a little vibration but it doesn't affect any parts, it's just the steel rod that was crooked a bit.

Peter, if you buy the wheels from lee valley, no need for threaded ends, their wheels are sold with special flanges like Al mentionned or separately anyways, i know they have it in the 1/2", don't know about 3/4" though. Gonna check....

They have 1/2" and 5/8" only Peter, since you already bought the 3/4" pillow block bearings, i'd follow this route all the way and go with at least a 1/2 hp motor unless advised otherwise by someone who knows more on this than me!

1/2" and even 3/4" shaft is too flexible. I made mine from 3/4" and now wish I had gone with 1" diameter.

I used stress-relieved steel shaft with threaded ends and had the machine shop cut a keyway for the pulley.BarryDaniels38926.4416666667

If you want near zero deflection then you might want to look into TGP shaft. (turned, ground and polished.) standard cold rolled bar stock is not true round and will wear out bearing before their expected life hours. Now with that said TGP bars are expensive. so you may not find this to be economical. Also 4140 steel will last much longer than c1018 (cold rolled round bar). The commercial arbors on the market have tapered spherical roller bearings and the shafts bearing surface is TGP. the entire shaft is turned but only the bearing surface is ground and polished but this really makes a big difference in the life of the bearing.

Klingspor sells a 1" by around 36" double-ended mandrel for around $90
that includes the pillow blocks, a pulley and pulley shield. It's a great
deal. I can't find it on their web site, but it's always shown in their catalog.
I have 14" buffs on mine. Every time someone raises this question I post
this pic, so I'm sure folks are getting tired of seeing it!
