Cool Bruce, good to see Phil is back into Olson's, I know for a while there he and Jim were not on the best of terms and he was playing a Charis, not that there is anything wrong with that though.

That looks like a sitka top though, isn't it? I've always though Phil liked the cedar top guitars, as he was the first commission for Jim Olson on a cedar top.

Boy Phil is starting to look old, mind you the last time I saw him that up close was in 1989 so, I must be looking old too

John H., right on all counts. Not Olson.

Rod, That red cedar top does look like sitka in the photo. Phil retired his 1984 Olson from the road. This one is ultracool. The doves ascend the fretboard this time and the doves are double inlays, abalone with mop centers, wowser. Braz rosewood purflings and rosette. This guitar has the straightest neck I've ever seen. Phil uses a super low action and light strings. This guitar is equipped with LR Baggs Duet system as is the Langejans he brought along to the benefit concert.

    There's actually never been a time when Phil and Jim weren't on the absolutely best terms. They not only have a great luthier/player relationship, but are very good friends as well. Phil holds Jim in very high regard both personally and professionally and a hope that every luthier has is to enjoy such a great friendship that is forged through the builder/player interaction as they create great guitars and great music as the result.


    The only reason that Jim was seen more regularly for a time with a Charis or Langejans is that his beloved Olson was showing signs of the many hours of use and travel that it had been exposed to and Phil wanted to save it a little wear.

    That and, of course, the fact that Bill Wise is building a very nice guitar that is a very close(almost exact) copy of an Olson SJ in dimension and appearance. When you have a long term relationship with a guitar created for you by a builder who is a good friend, you'll do whatever is necessary to keep it playing and sounding great as long as possible.

    I was able to play the SJ in this photo a while ago when I spent some time with Phil at one of his concerts and it is truly a beauty as well.

Hi Kevin, that truly is a wonderfully beautiful and well crafted guitar, I was so amazed just holding it and looking at it. Phil Keaggy is a tremendous player and if ever there was a person that could bring out the best in a guitar, he's the man.

My smile was compounded by several events.

1) We were in the green room with Phil Keaggy (the other guy in the photo, Phil Love, is a lifelong friend to Keaggy and a few years less to me)

2) We safely made the trip from Arkansas to Memphis and found the venue

3) I knew what was going to happen when my son and one of his good friends heard Keaggy for the first time.

4) I had Keaggy's new Olson in my hands

(even though I was in Tennessee, I was in HOG heaven)

I too have a version of Jim's SJ, what's not to like? Bill was wise to build it too.

Food at Backyard burgers, 15 dollars. Tickets to the concert, 75 dollars. Keaggy CD, 15 dollars. Gas round-trip, 55 dollars. Watching my son play Blackbird for Phil Keaggy on the Olson, priceless.

Hearing Phil comment, "Oh, he's a natural!", um well let me just say, Dad is still grinning with pride.

Tow truck, $40, what a deal! Imagine if that car broke down last night in Memphis an hour before midnight? It brought us home by 2:30 a.m. My wife jumps in it this morning, calls back from church, this thing is noisy. Huh?

We drove that thing to Memphis and back no problem, no noise.. be there in ten minutes. I left my truck and headed out the drive with the Buick. Pop pop pop, zing........   blew a CV Joint, completely and totally. ... that tow truck.

It's out in the drive waiting one me to don one of my many hats....    .... tomorrow.

Hey Bruce, do you or Phil Love know Les Haynie? Seems I remember him saying once that he knew a friend of Keaggy's down in your neck of the woods. Les is the owner of Blue Moon Music in Fayetteville, AR, my favorite local guitar shop.

Jon, yes, Les let me paw all over his Collings, Bourgeois, Cruzes when I was first getting started. And indeed Phil #2 in the Picture is Les's friend who lives here in Russellville.

Ahh, cool, nice to make that connection. I'm a long time Blue Moon customer since he opened up shop while I was in college. Les knew me by name before I ever bought any instruments from him while I was a poor college kid in the mid-late 90's. Good way to make a dedicated customer.
