Bob,

This question would fit well in the main forum. It's not "off topic" at all.

So far I have always FP the back and sides. I have only built classical so far and this seems common. If I built SS, I don't think FP would be sturdy enough for the added protection needed and would probably nitro the b/s.

John

BTW, my Hauser guitar I have on order (a real Hauser III) uses FP top and a nitro back and sides.John Elshaw38936.5617592593

Thanks so much everyone,
Are you discussing classical? I thought steel string B/s many times is finished differently

Bob: No, not yet. I'm concentrating on standard 14 fret Dreads right now. I think I may branch out alittle bit when spring rolls around again.

My FP is looking good except for a bit of unevenness. It looks as if there is oil on the surface in some areas, but it will not wipe off with Naptha, and it does not feel oily. Any suggestions?

Sorry for long delay in response but I have been on vacation and have not caught up on my reading yet. It sound to me like you have an unglazed finish. When you finish adding film thickness the last rubbing process is the glazing. this is where the film gets polished to a level sheen. this is done with very very little and very thin cut of shellac and more solvent then the other processes. it also is done in with the grain of the guitar in a motion very much like buffing shoes (glide on/glide off) Also you can take it to extrem high gloss with a polishing compound or high speed buffer and menzerna compounds.MichaelP38944.5704166667

Thanks,[/QUOTE]

I do 2 different hybrid finishes one FP top/ktm9 back & sides, the other is FP top and nitro back and sides. but you could do all sorts of combos

John I hear that all the time but IPMO it is not true. most all vintage mandolins were FP, and they get more pick scratches than guitars. FP get knocked for being soft, but I'm guessing it is about 80% of nitro's Rockwell hardness (Rockwell hardness not really relevant to finish but make since to me )and much easier to repair. I have done 90% of my SS guitars FP They are holding up just fine.MichaelP38944.6779513889
