This has been up for quite a while... It is from that special sale that Todd did for someone who (I think) liquidated their entire stash.... There were a couple or really nice sets in there for a lot less... 
This one is $900, still expensive... but REALLLLLLY nice. |

There are a number of builders who have no trouble selling high-price instruments that aren't afraid of spending that much on a set of wood, because they can easliy pass the cost on to the customer, who is willing to spend the cash..... It's a matter of perspective. |

It's just wood, no more only a couple of bits of wood. I think it is shameful for anyone to pay this sort of money as it just fuels the fire of destruction that has led us to this point, just my opinion though and no more. Cheers Kim |

That's a price I like to see - then again I may be in a sellers position soon. 
I got a big stack of wood from a barn at an estate auction this weekend, and the 1" x 70" x 7 3/4" slab of brazilian that happened to be in it is about the darkest chocolate I've ever seen. Certainly darker than the boards above. I tried to take a photo, but it always comes out looking like ebony. There was also a bunch of maple and some quartered mission oak, some mahoganies, embuya, and a few other tropical hardwoods I have yet to identify. The really exciting one may turn out to be about 18 board feet of figured pernambuco. It may not be, but it hasn't been ruled out yet. |

It was bue with ghost flames airbrushed on. It looked awesome, for a motorcycle that is. He claimed the wood was master grade brazilian and a master grade engleman top.   To each his own.

[/QUOTE] Hey Martin, don't get me wrong, I love the stuff to and would be thrilled to have a couple of dozen sets of my own. My point is however that 2K is an obscene amount to pay for just one set of wood. When this sort of money is on the table it has a flow on affect. It goes right back to the jungle and temptation becomes so high that it pushes good people into doing things that they may not ordinarily consider doing. Also, lucrative commodities tend to attract some very unsavoury opportunist who will stop at nothing to make a buck. In this situation, the big problems arises when the normally nice guy meets with the shark with a view to cash in, this meeting can be disastrous for the family of the poor bread winner who was tempted because he just needed to feed his family, big money always turns things bad, very bad indeed. Now if that bit of insight has made any of my beloved OLF'ers feel a little guilty about their own stash of braz, just remember this. All this evil can be avoided if you sell it cheap. So please, feel free to PM me if you need to cleanse your sole brothers and sisters cause I am always trying to find a way to lift my fellows spirit.
Oh, and Martin...nice set

I've driven by that one a million times but never been in. I'm free tuesday through thursday. And scraped one face of the suspected pernambuco last night, and although there are a lot of characteristics that are right through a 10x loop, it didn't turn my hands purple. The shavings do yield a nice pigment in alchohol, but I think pernambuco is less likely at this point. It is some of the hardest wood I've ever worked in my life (took me about an hour and a half just to scrape three square feet clean of resawing marks) and has a specific gravity of roughly 1.1. |

Folks not trying to be argumentative - but why is it everyone goes ga ga over BRW? I've played a number of BRW guitars - Martin's, custom made that were nice etc. They were nice but nothing to my ear really distinguished them from other fine flattops I've played. I dunno maybe its cause I am a dumb flamed maple archtop builder. Doesn't BRW tend to prezel easily and develop nasty hairline cracks, dull the hell out of tools etc. I don't get it

It's these great ones, and the folklore that follows them, that keeps the demand high. Today, we have access to many woods that have similar, and often identical, properties, and therefor have the same tone potential as Braz.Rw, but because the great pre war guitars were made of Braz.Rw, the alternatives will not fetch the same premiums. To be fair, these new ones, of alternative woods(and of Braz,RW), don't have 60-80 years of aging, often under less than ideal conditions(which may or may not have an effect on tone, but I, for one, believe it does), theefor their true potential is not yet known. But, for sure, if you ever get to sit across a truly great one, in the hands of a player who can wring the tone out of it, and if you have ears capable of hearing it, it can be magic. Then, you'll get it. |
