Hi Guys.
This one was a little complicated because it's on a violin fingerboard.
Going over the very high radius curve of the fingerboard took alot of mapping out and measuring. The seperate pieces all had to fit, or they would sand through. I also used 2mm pearl to expand the reach of the feathers. The black pearl and gold pearl is still .05 or so. It was also glued in reverse so the gold pearl didn't sand out.

It's also not in ebony but in a resin type material. Anyway- the feathers are alternating white river and normal MOP. The images make this one look way less dramatic than it really is. In reality it's not just flat white.. it has a lot of flash.

Thanks for looking.
Craig L.

It's hard to do realism image style inlays on a violin radius, for me anyway...- mainly because of the mapping of the pieces. You can't just sink down a piece of pearl into the fingerboard. The whole image has to be drawn, then mapped out to fit the maximum reach of the flat shell over the curves.
This could have been (on a guitar) maybe a less complicated piece, on a violin at 1.75 inches wide it's 39 seperate pieces.

Craig,
Beauty, simplicity and detail....all three work together nicely on this one. Nice piece! It has that very elegant Lavin signature style that shows up in your pieces all of the time.

Violin fingerboards are tough..even with much simpler subject matter. Inspiring and encouraging.

Thanks for sharing that with us,

Craig -- 39 pieces over that radius    Hopefully you weren't trying to do that while your a/c unit was on the fritz.

Thanks again for the inspiration!

And to answer other questions- yes I work off of photos, as well as free draw. Some taken by me, some from other sources. The customer has seen it and says it's exactly what she wanted to inspire her faith while she plays the violin. Here are some pics of the inlay in process.
Notice the curve of the fingerboard.
Thanks! Craig
