A year ago or so, I took advantage of a sale one of our sponsors was offering on Adirondack spruce --- I think it was Colonial --- and I brought three sets at a discount. (I don't remember what the discount was, but I thought it was a great deal at the time.) Well, this weekend I strung up the first guitar I have made with one of these outstanding tops. (It's the first time I have used Adirondack spruce at all.) Omigosh! I won't try to describe the sound, because I always find those descriptions pretty useless. But I will say that minutes after the guitar was strung up, it already sounded as good as or better than any of my other guitars that have been strung up for years. Now, a couple days later, it has opened up a little, at I am blown away. I know it has to continue improving, and I am anxious to see how it sounds in a few weeks. I have always been proud of the tone I get from my guitars --- from my first, I felt they sounded a bit better than the nice Martin/Taylor lines. (Cosmetics weren't so hot on the first couple, but tone was always good.) But this takes the tone to a completely different level. This is true even though this is a mahogany guitar, and I have never been a big fan of the mahogany sound. I know Adirondack is hard to get (and expensive), but if I can consistently repeat this tone, it's worth a lot more than I paid for this wood. I see myself making a lot of guitars with Adirondack in the future. Assuming I am remembering correctly that I bought this from Colonial (my memory is very unreliable), thanks! I'll be ordering more no matter what, but you can expect a big order from me next time you decide to offer an Adirondack sale again! I'll post some pics soon. Also, is there a way to post an mp3 to the forum? If so, I'll record something and post it. |
