Opinions wanted....

I'm building a OO guitar for a guy with this set of mahogany, and was wondering if I'm the only one who thinks this piece is really cool.....and no, I haven't come out of retirement. This is an exception to the rules of retirement. I can do that, because I write the rules...

The zipper strip may not happen, I'm thinking a solid BRW strip instead, with BRW bindings...

Hesh, this is Honduran, but happens to have that great golden red-brown color that Cuban has. This guitar is going to have flitch cut sides too....yowza!

I love that git'fiddle Hesh...looks really sweet. The BRW appointments are very tastefully done.

Hi Don,

        Your Mahogany looks very similar to my No.1 . Honduran Mahogany with E.I.Rosewood binding and Maple Purfling

I got this Honduran here in Australia from a Sydney Luthier . I used a zipper that had red in it . Rather suited the Mahogany

I love it. Reminds me of some boards I bought "last century" in the 60's. Kept them around for decades before cutting into them. Here's a back with much the same look as yours...and it made a killer guitar!

I'm becoming like Colin....I'm really starting to become a mahogany fan. It's great wood. Today I was tapping some that I have up for sale on the website, and the taptone was crispy... much more like rosewood than any mahogany I've used.

I always like the simplicity of mahohany. My vote would be to go with the BRW strip. Nice wood Don.

The red comes out a lot more in the flesh.

Thanks for your kind words Don . It's difficult to beat Mahogany with a rosewood binding . The combination is a class act.

Don, just a thought. I used curly Koa bindings and backstrip on a mahogany guitar that looks really nice.

like some hard (dense,stiff) stuff you
have there. Curly maple bindings, with
that backstrip, if you ask me.

Hey Jimmie, that's not out of the realm of possibilities. I have oodles of highly flamed black acacia bindings that would look great with this too. I have one board that is really really red in color compared to the others, which I'm determined to use for bindings. They might be just the trick.
Then again, the Brazilian would be really nice too, and it just so happens that I have a bunch of that as well.
I'll have to let the person who is getting this decide.

Wade, I'll do my best to get this one to an NEL meeting before it goes to its New Hampshire home. It's gonna be a very slow project though, since nothing else has been decide on.

Don, you are NOT the only one who thinks that's a cool piece.
I really like it. In fact, in Houston I found a board nearly identical to what you picture, and considered myself quite fortunate. I love the stuff. That will be a beautiful guitar, and nearly anything you put with it will look good.

I think I'm going to have to tell the pay office at work to just forward my salary to Don in future, save me the trouble.

Don, that mahogany is on fire! I think your customer will br thrilled with it. If not, I'd be m ore than happy to take it off your hands...just to make the customer happy.

Now that is what I call zoot!!!! Don that's as good a piece of Honduran as you will find I know it will make a guitar that sounds like angel singing. On the basis that it is so nice it needs no adornment I'd go will the BRW strip and bindings with simple black line purfling. The only other binding I'd like with it is tortoise, Tortoise and mahogany is a great combination.

So you don't have to compromise your retirement, send that wood over to me and I'll give it my personal attention!

I would have to agree on all counts Colin. I'm leaning heavily toward BRW appointments. Problem is, I have a few different colors of BRW from which to cut bindings. Brick red, chocolate brown, pink, tan, yadda yadda. I'm leaning toward the red stuff, with thin wbw purflings perhaps. Not sure yet.

I found another board like this one the other day, so I've got a few of these OO sets for the stash. YeeHa!

I'd consider parting with a set or two. I guess you'll have to watch the site to see if I put them up for sale...

Yes!! I like it very much! In fact Mahogany is probably my favorite back and sides wood. Combine Mahogany with some brz binding...yummy. Here is just that combo.. flamed mahogany and brz bindings.
