Hey Gang...

I'm building a guitar for a customer, he wants something that looks like this for the back and sides:

It looks like quilted maple to me, so I'm looking for pictures of other sets that would be comparable to this. I'll be using Red-Spruce for the top and either maple or pale mahogany for the neck.

I need to send him pictures so he can decide and we can get started on his guitar, I suggest cherry, sapelle and possibly bubinga or mahogany as alternatives. In fact I'd really like to find some quilted mahogany if possible both for his and some other stuff.

If you have some PM me, my normal sources seem to be out....

Thanks

Davis, I sent you an email but it might have been and old address. anyway, here's a sample of some I have. Quilted Sapele from the "other" tree. Bob C had some. If you can't find it there give me a call (it won't be cheap though).

That looks more like quilted maple with analine dye to me. In fact the example looks like a Taylor 610 to me. If that is what your customer wants, let me know as I have a lifetime supply of the dye that Taylor uses. I could be convinced to part with some.

You will find that Grizzly has some very nice sets like that. Also LMI and Gilmer woods often have Quilted Maple sets.

I actually gave him the link to Bobs site and told him to go shopping there

I warned him that finding wood like that would not be cheap but he seems undeterred, we'll see once he starts pricing it all out...

Thanks

I'll go poke around those sites, Allied is out. I have to get wood from Grizzly, maybe I need to go looking. I want him to fully decide on what he wants so I can get him to commit to the wood and I can get rolling...

Thanks

Wow I'm impressed, that's what it is but it's a custom model made for Alan Jackson :)

Once we decide on wood I may see if I can get some of that from you

Thanks

Paul if its Quilted Maple you are after I have a source that could fix you up. I've got a set of Quilted Maple almost as pretty as that and it won't be nearly as expensive as the quilted sapele Paul Woolson flashed us with. (Paul was that the beauty that appeared on the cover of GuitarMaker??)

PM me if you are interested.Anthony Z38950.962962963

If you've got quilted sapele for sale, I'm probably interested.

Shoot me the details whenever it's convenient.

Thanks,
Andrew

That's quilt maple with some amber/yellow tint. It's not cheap, but not impossible to find at that quality. Shoot Chuck Hatch an email (3Dhardwoods.com) and see if he can set you up with stuff. Mostly does billets, though. I've got some really nice electric tops from him.
