Hey guys, I'm about to do my first guitar with a truss rod accessable at the headstock. Maybe will use a hot rod from Stewmac....not sure yet.
Do you guys drop it in the slot without a filler strip?
Is there anything else I should be aware of?

Any technique in particular?

Better ask now or I'll be asking after its too late!

Peter, after spending a decade or so at a repair bench (and by the way, you repair guys--Evan, et al--are my heroes...good repair work takes more brains, more courage, more stamina, just more of everything) I decided to access the TR from the peghead. Which was an aesthetic about-face for me. It's so much kinder to the repairman.
So anyway, remember to leave enough wood on the back side of the neck volute area to accomodate the slightly deeper pocket where the block will sit. I don't use a filler strip over the rod, just a piece of tape.

Hope you don't mind me saluting our repairing brethren, it's just something I've wanted to say for awhile.

Gotta chime in here, thanks Steve! But truly I am in awe of the builders, that takes patience dedication and an artistic flair that is just amazing. I have seen stuff on this forum that stunned me with creativity. I also had the pleasure of seeing Steve's guitars (and others) up close and was again in awe.
Looks like we have ourselves a mutual admiration thing going on! That suits me just fine.

Peghead, one-way rod, filler strip. The LMI rod has a plastic sleeve, the attachment end has a hook. I drill a 3/16 inch hole and radius the turn to match the hook.

On the other end, I've taken to making a drop in drilled mahogany slot filler. That is where the nut applies pressure to the neck. I try to leave as much meat as possible so as not to weaken the neck. The filler strip is then added, and then planed back after the glue dries.

It's a challenge, but satisfying to conquer the process. Good luck Peter.

I'm finishing off a Dred with a stewmac hotrod.

I put my logo on the TR cover (less damage if I make a hash of the inlay!!!)

Just follow the instructions that come with it. they're really straight forward and like Steve said above, watch the depth. I drew it all to scale on a A3 sheet and stuck it on the wall where I'd have no excuse for not remembering!!! (mind you, it's not so big, my neck is 21mm deep at its thinnest.......)
