I bought this set last year. Has anyone seen anything like this on a guitar?
(BTW_ I know what I was told that it is, I'm curious if you all agree.)

It looks like waterfall bubinga....but it is just a guess. I would use it!!!

Yep, my guess would be some seriously curly bubinga. I have a plank of the stuff that looks very much like that.

I'd guess bubinga as well but I think it's flatsawn.

Have you ever seen it in a guitar? Does anyone have pics/links? Is this stuff stable?
It is very hard wood.
I was told it was pomele bubinga.

iT'S DEFINATELY BUBINGA!!
MAKES GREAT GUITARS!
Just make sure your side thickness BEFORE bending is around .085 because you'll have some facets to deal with!
The high figure has some flat and so to speak quartered grain and the flat grain will not bend smoothly between the two grain directions!You need extra thickness to sand the sides level!

BUT this stuff looks great -especially with a sealer coat of shellac !
Take your time-listen to the wood when bending!
It makes great sounding guitars!
I've made many in the last 30 years!
You can do it!

Waterfall bubinga, it lookee great on JJ's guitar and it should be a killer under finish!

Paul W, yes of course it's mostly flatsawn! Bubinga shows its figure best when flatsawn and also nearest the sapwood. Quilt figure also shows best when flatsawn depending on species.

Flatsawn bubinga. For the second part of the question, "NO". Flatsawn orientated wood is the most prone to splitting of any grain orientation because the med rays are the weakest link in wood structure and they run radially. This is why flatsawn tends to split more often. Movement is of course greater in tangent also. .....all and all it's each his own choice in the end, but why increase the odds of failure solely on aesthetics?

I am finishing a Bubinga B&S guitar right now and after sealing with ZPoxy the grain popped along with my eyes out of the sockett. Great point on the side thickness, take it down to .85 for sure. This can snap-carckle-pop quick if to thick and dry.
