In the past I have always settled for plastic pickguards. I would like to be able to match my wood rosette rings. I have learned how to make wood "potato chips" it just would be nice if I could make something that stays flat. If you have any ideas or tips please share. Thanks! Tom |

You mean like this It is 0.03 inch thick macassar ebony veneer that was simply glued before finishing and masked off before spraying with lacquer. I oil finished it so the scratches can be fixed easier. |

Thanks again Ken, i wanted to do just that on my no 2 but my rosette was too big to have a wood pickguard, i'll really make my rosette smaller next time around, it looks fabulous! |

Ken thanks for the suggestion. pre-cut veneer would make the job easier, I prefer to cut my own from burl blocks Ive owned for some 20 yrs. I have already made the rosette rings from slices off of the block. I will try and heat my blanks with a iron that mite solve my problem. Your bridge with the scroll work is great, I have carved scrolls for furniture elements but never crossed my mind to carve them on a bridge,outstanding very creative design.

Suggestion: I bought 2 plastic sheets from S/M. Cut piece of plastic so it is a little larger than the pick guard. Glue verneer to plastic, place plenty of weight on glued pickguard. Next, cut protuding plastic even with verneer. Bevel edges to about 45 degrees. Now you have guard, mounted on plastic with either a thin black or white border to your pickguard, then can use double sided plastic film to mount. Therefor, you can easily remove for repairs or to change the wood used for guard (make another laminate as above. Just my idea. |

Hi Tom, You can find 3 different woods that are used. The Company is called Grizzly Industries.com They are very reasonable...less than $8 each. If you have trouble finding them get back with me. walter

Thanks for all of the help. I found my problem, the block I sliced for my first try just don't like to stay flat. Grain problem. Flat right off the saw, but as soon as I tried to seal with shellac, they would curl. Took a slice from a different block and it stays flat, even after sealing with shellac. It will work now, I love when I can blame the wood. 
I rough cut the pickguard shape just to see how it will look. What do you think?

Tom, I really like how it matches the rosette. That will make a great pickguard! Who need tortise when you have burlwood around?! |
