Holy smokes! You guys need to get a life if you're waiting for pictures from little ol' me!   

(Kidding of course).

Yeah, I haven't yet taken any "real" pictures, I've been having too much fun playing it! But, here's a couple of teasers I did snap during the end of the building phase.

Enjoy, and more will be coming, I promise.

For those of you that remember, pay attention to the headstock and bridge - you guys gave me positive feedback about that. Especially the headstock, which was done in that shape for specific reasons, and I didn't really like the shape. But now, I guess it looks good enough even to me that I don't mind it at all. Also the finishing problems (imprinting) were all resolved in a re-finish. Came out pretty darn well in the second go-around.

Lest there be any confusion, yes it is indeed my first guitar. And between my day job and my attention to detail, it didn't go quickly ... especially when there were six month periods where I didn't even set foot in the shop. But ... it's finally done ... after SEVEN YEARS! I can't wait to start #2.

Wow Pete! Those were definitely worth waiting for! Excellent job. I really do like the headstock and the green herringbone is terriffic.

I'll try to take some "real" photos this weekend. I have a lot of fun with the photography part too but I just haven't set aside the time to shoot my own instrument.   If any of you have seen photos of Vivian Ecker's TJV - I took those on my kitchen table after a rushed meal with Viv. Everything about lutherie is fun, even the photo shoots!

Maybe I should have spent 7 years on my number 1. I guess you aren't considering going into the business. Let's see. 1 instrument every 7 years with a modest salary of $50K. That would wound out to a selling price of $350,000. So much for the labor theory of value.

Pete, all kidding aside, you clearly didn't do anything on this guitar until you were sure of what you were doing. How many test pieces of things like necks and inlays did you do along the way?

Well, that's very true, Mike. I did do a lot of dry runs and test runs and practicing with certain things. Interestingly, though, none with the neck or inlay you mention. The neck just sort of happened, sort of took care of itself, which totally amazed me, since I don't trust my manual skills any. That's one reason I make too many jigs -- I always make a jig if I think it will preclude me from screwing with a manual operation. I did have one prior inlay experience, and that was inlaying an abalone "V" on the cocobolo trim on the portable router table I made for Viv way back.

Pete -- fabulous looking guitar and congratulations. Seven years -- now that's perserverance! That's a really cool end graft!

#1, in a way, included some things that I needed to prove to myself regarding my ability. IMHO, I think I did OK. Doing some of the fancy stuff I did (like the home made green/purple/white herringbone and zig-zag backstrip) took a lot of extra time. But for now, the "proving" is done.

So, next, I go with what I'll call "understated elegance" (aka QUICK AND SIMPLE!), and instead concentrate on tone. The only "fancy" thing I'm doing on #2 is a cutaway. I find I actually use those upper frets now and then.Pete Licis38967.3912037037
