Hey Gang...

I need to find a collet that will allow me to use 1/8" shank bits in my router, I've done some digging and they seem to be very elusive...

Any idea where I can find some easily??

I was thinking StewMac had some sort of adapter for a 1/4" collet. I could be mistaken but it's worth a look.

And so they do...

Paul I recently was looking for exactly the same thing. The only adapter I found was a 1/4 to 1/8 collet adapter for a Rotozip tool. I am not sure if this will work but it wasn't very expensive and is probably availabe in your area.

Cheap would be good...

I'd like to mount the bits in the collet and have them set so that I would know their length for the CNC when I pop them in...

I'll stop by woodcraft and see if they possibly have some and how cheap they are...

Ran down to Home Depot and picked up the Rotozip one it's 3/8" to 1/8" so I have to go get a 1/2" to 3/8" for that...

The stew mac one is perfect, so I'll probably order one of those too..

I don't have a lot of choice, there are no 1/2" to 1/8" collets that I can find anywhere. That would be ideal actually, I did find a cool litte 1/4" to 1/8" that locks in the 1/8" shaft at lowes, going to try that tomorrow and see how it works...

I checked Lee Valley as well and no go...

at some point I'm going to have to stop this nonsense and just get a spindle for my CNC machine, this router stuff is getting weird

While we are discussing collets..... Are all collets the same? I have an older Bosch laminate trimmer that they don't have any information and or parts for. So.... can I use another Bosch collet?

do not use two adapters; just asking for trouble. get a 1/4" collet for your router and a 1/4" - 1/8" adapter.

lillian, all collets are not the same just because they come from the same manufacturer.

if the lock nut taper does not mate correctly with the collet taper, if the collet is too long for the arbor, etc., flying router bits are a distinct possibility. they can do a lot of damage at 20000+rpm.

who did you try for a new collet, the local big box? i found bosch usa very helpful in the past getting collets for older machines. try them direct.crazymanmichael38967.040474537

Crazymanmichael is right. I somehow thought you were talking about collet adapters, not collets. Please listen to Crazymanmichael. With routers, you should stick with one made specifically for your model.

Paul what brand is your router? Just about all the major mfg.'s that I'm aware of make a 1/4" collet for their 1/2" routers. That's what you need to buy. Then the 1/4" to 1/8" adapter will work fine.

Michael, I contacted Bosch and was informated that they haven't dealt with Stanley products for over 20 years and they do not have information or parts for my router. That made me tilt my head a bit. Stanley is no where on the router. Bosch is the only name I found.

It is really a shame. Its solidly built, metal body, works beautifully. Oh well. I'll figure out something to so with it I guess.Aoibeann38967.2977430556

lillian, have you lost the collet, or is it worn out, or what. is it the little stanley with the domed top on the cylinder? i have seen them come up on ebay from time to time.

Ok let me explain my position on this...

The router is bolted in my CNC machine, currently I have a 1/2" quick change chuck in it, I would have used a 1/4" quick change but they don't make them.

I have 1/4" chucks for the router (it's a porter cable), that's not the issue. The issue is that changing chucks with the router bolted into the machine is not something I want to do, once I had the quick chuck in the machine there was no looking back. I'm most likely just going to have a collet made that will go from 1/2" to 1/8", there's not technical reason it can't be done. I just need to find a machine shop who will fab one for me, should be super simple to do.

The little collet's I found last night turn the 1/8" shank into a 1/4" shank because they *lock* the shank into the collet with a set screw, so it's just like having a 1/4" bit in there. I'll try those today and see how they work, but so far they look promising...

Michael, I bought this one off Ebay. Didn't look to see if there was a collet, just assume there was 'cuz the seller said everything was there, great working condition, money back, etc. Plugged it in to check that it did work and then pack it away to move. Since a picture is worth a thousand words....
