Terry, I always understood that the best glue joints are wood to wood with nothing in between. I would continue to scrape to bare wood especially for a bridge.

Shellac should not have penetrated the wood much at all. yes I would most defiantly scrape back to clear wood.

Like Michael says the shellac shouldnt penetrate the wood. Sometimes if theres a bit of tear out the shellac may be filling the lower torn out areas and youre missing them with the sandpaper.
