Just wanting to check what the minimum width/height would be for a dread side set. I'm just thinking this thing through(not doing so well at it obviously) and wondering if a 5" side set is going to work with a 4 7/8" thich dread....not much room for error there.... Can't work, can it? What is the minimum size set typical for a dread, it just seems difficult to find much in the way of sides over 5".

4-7/8"? Piece of cake. You don't have to have them full height, and if you're careful, and use purflings, you can get away with 4-5/8" or even 4-1/2". It's tricky, but it can be done. In my opinion...

When buying wood, I insist on 5" minimum for dread sides. I like to see 5-1/8"....

I also don't like seeing the binding cuts right through the sides and to the linings, which is what leaving the linings proud equates to. In a pinch, with a really special set of wood, yeah, once in a while, but I much rather start with room to spare.

Remember, the top's edge, and not just the back's, needs profiling also.....Mario38969.819849537

Me too, but most of the time it's not a reality to get sides that wide. I've learned to make do...

I suppose if you radius the whole top then you have that situation, but many builders, including me, don't radius the top except to put a slight dome in the top itself, but leave the rim flat.

Exactly! that's why I felt I would be running into difficulty at 5"...so I too think 5 1/8 or larger would be helpful.

My dreds are 4 3/4" at the tail block and 3 3/4" at the neck block. The top and back add nearly another 1/4".
