Does anybody know the tolerances of the SM straight edges. I am working on setting up my new table saw and I have 3 "known" straight edges and none of them agree.

I have my table flat to within .002" across the entire surface and I am wondering if I should keep at it, or if I am being obsessive. But it is getting close enough that I am beginning to wonder about the tolerances of the straight edges.

Flat with in .002 across a surface the size of table saw is very very good. It can be better but on something like a table saw your using a large area of surface not one location so I don'r think that error is very likely to show up in use with a table saw.

Just looked up the in the Stew-mac catelogue and they are +/- .0015/ft. (The Lee Valley edge is within .001 over it's entire 24 inch length for less money...but only offered in the 24 inch size, mine arrived yesterday )

Brock, I have to agree, 2 thou is way beyond GREAT! You're doing fine. What kind of saw did you get, we want pictures!

You'll love it Brock! I've had 2 of the Grizzlies...the 3hp I built cabinets and furniture with is still going strong 12 years now! (I WISH it was within .002 across the table... ).

I am pretty excited about it. This is my first nice table saw.

Now, my next challenge / task is getting the miterslots parallel to the blade.

Brock Just to be sure we are talking apples to apples here the tolerance of .0015/ft is on StewMacs precision straight edges. They also sell rulers and other straight edges such as fret scales and notched straight edges that are not ground any where near this toleranceMichaelP38973.4107291667

Brock, I've always felt you were a bit obsessive over your wood quality, and now I realize it extends much farther....


It's not a surface plate, it's a tablesaw top!

I also have the 24" SM straightedge, and I'll test it out on my tablesaw top, just as soon as the top gets back from being lapped.
