This morning I felt like doing something different, so the guitar shop became a fly tying shop. I tied a half dozen small poppers, a few spiders, and a few small streamers. Then I just had to try them out. I went to Arrowhead lake tricked one bluegill, hurt his mouth, reeled him in, gave him a short appology then released him. Flies work just fine. It's bluegrass music at Gibbey's this afternoon. I'll be playing my new sapele grand concert. It's been strung up for about 3-4 days and sounding good. Al |

Yeah we all need a change from time to time. Went fishing last week, 7 Salmon from 8-28 lbs, then headed out sailing for 5 days. Got back home and right now our Town is ringed in by Forest fires, a new record with over 480 fires burning in the area, Looks like I'll be heading out on fire crews this week  Life is always throwing changes at you eh?

Arvey be careful. When I lived in California, I helped fight a wildfire, and ended up with a case of pleurasy from breathing the smoke. Every time I took a breath it felt like a knife in the lung. You Canadians have some really nice fishing. Here we have bass, panfish, catfish, stripers, and one lake stocked with muskie. Take care Al |

Billy when I lived in California I enjoyed stripers from the SF bay, trout, steelhead, and the spearfishing in the kelp beds was great. We used to get a lot of lingcod and cabezone around Monterey and Santa Cruz. Al |

I understand Al, Last time I was drafted to fight fires We ended up getting pinned down between a two fires and had to hold out in a lake untill they could get the chopers in to pull us out. I was coughing up black soot for weeks. Fortunately they ussually just send the young guys to the front, us older farts provide backup to them. As it turns out we have had a slow drizzel falling since yesterday and the fires are slowing down so they might not have to call in the reserves. In a way it is too bad as its good pay. And yes we have good fishing here, World record Speckled trout was pulled out about 4 min. from my house. If it wasn't so cold all winter I'd say I live in paradise but as a friend pointed out a while back, If we had all this beuty and warm weather everyone would want to move here.

Al - Once again you NoCal guys rubbing it in! I have to drive 4 hours just to get to the Sierra's to catch brookies!

Heheh... I'll rub it in a little more Billy. I'm 30 minutes from the Blue Ribbon stretch of the Missouri (3000 - 5000) fish per mile, average size 16 in., 20 minutes from the Little Blackfoot, and about 1 1/2 - 2 hours from the Madison, Gallitan, Beaverhead, Bighole, Clark Fork, Rock Creek and the Bitterroot. Lotso fishin here! BIG browns coming up out of the lakes soon! I use my steelhead gear for those! Yeehaw! -Mark |

Had to go up the road a bit today so droped a line in a little creek on the way, Had a little Speckled trout in about 10 Min. I ussually keep a rod in the truck in case I get an urge  I should mention though, I'm not a serious fisher, I know guys who will go out at 5:30 in the morning and spend all day trying to land the big one. Me, If I don't have a fish in 20 min. i'm finished. |

[/QUOTE] When I moved from Texas to Bakersfield in the mid-70s (don't ask  ), one of the things I regretted most was the lousy fresh water fishing in the areas around B'town. Got real tired of going into bait shops and seeing all the polaroids of huge stripers all over the wall, and not getting a single bite all weekend. I started driving over to the coast and fishing off the piers, where I had much better luck. The central coast has some excellent piers up around Avila and Cayucos, and you can catch all sorts of fish from them.
When I moved to SoCal in the mid-80s, I did a fair amount of surf fishing, mostly along Huntington Beach. Caught a lot of corbina mostly. Knew a fellow when I was there who used to go up to the Salton Sea and fish for tilapia -- back when nobody had heard of it -- and he'd tell me stories about how good the tilapia fishing was there. Never made it to the Salton to try it out for myself, though. Now that I'm back in Texas, I'm also back to freshwater fishing again. We head up to lake Conroe occasionally, and catch mostly blue or channel cat, bluegill, and the occasional white bass. Haven't tried fishing in the Gulf yet, but I've known folks who have, and who have had pretty good luck: flounder, redfish, gafftop, etc. Best, Michael |

I seem to catch at least one seagull a year. Visious creatures when that little fish they were chasing turns out to have hooks in it. |
