I'm in the planning process of building a new mandolin. I was thinking about giving it a slotted peghead. I know I have seen it done on many older mandolins, but is their a structural reason why it is not done much any more, or is it simply because people dont like the style of it. If it is done, is it possible just to use regular A-Style mandolin tuning machines and put them in sideways? any help would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks. -Nate, the happy man! |

quality a style machines would not have the string holes in the correct position. |

Schaller makes slot-head style tuning machines... I know because I ordered some through a local shop and they accidentally sent the ones for slotted heads. |

I would think the main drawback (other than getting all those holes lined up!) would be in restringing. Little space/big fingers. |
