Mike,
my vision of you in a ruffled shirt and shiny knee-high boots is not a
pretty one. And playing a mandolin with a hook seems tricky. Blimey!

BELAY THAT!! Sayz Aye!

Everyday be speak like a pirate day! AAARRRRGH!!!

Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me.
We pillage, we plunder, we rifle, and loot,
Drink up, me 'earties, yo ho.
We kidnap and ravage and don't give a hoot,
Drink up me 'earties, yo ho.

Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me.
We extort, we pilfer, we filch, and sack,
Drink up, me 'earties, yo ho.
Maraud and embezzle, and even high-jack,
Drink up, me 'earties, yo ho.

Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me.
We kindle and char, inflame and ignite,
Drink up, me 'earties, yo ho.
We burn up the city, we're really a fright,
Drink up, me 'earties, yo ho.

We're rascals, scoundrels, villans, and knaves,
Drink up, me 'earties, yo ho.
We're devils and black sheep, really bad eggs,
Drink up, me 'earties, yo ho.

Arnt,
This must sound bizzare. I'll try to explain.

British seaman had a unique accent and sprinkled their everyday talk with nautical terms. This is not too suprising since, in England, the accent changes with realtively small changes in geography, class, the high school you attended and perhaps even shoe size.

Robert Louis Stevenson wrote a book called Treasure Island where he tried to capture the sound of this accent. It turns out, in the book, the all the seaman were pirates. In 1934 this book was made into a movie starring Lionel Barrymore and Wallace Beery. Wallace Beery was the pirate Long John Silver. Beery's interpretation of Stevenson's "pirate accent" was quite colorful. So much so that any other pirate themed movie made after that used the same accent.

Most English speaking people have seen Treasure Island or at least several other pirate movies and have developed a sense of the accent. Sometimes people will talk like a pirate when spending time with their friends. As to why there is an international talk like a pirate day, see
this.

It's not hard at all. You just expoy the pick onto the end of the hook. Fancy pirates have a seperate hook made just for mandolin playing. If the hook is on the left hand, you tie a spare finger that you picked up during the last raid to it. You can only play one note at a time, no chords, however.

Thanks, Mike!

Actually, I had a hunch, but thanks for filling me in. I know the book you are referring to, it is well known even in the non English speaking world. Up here it is known as "Skatten pa Sjoroveroya"! And everbody knows pirate language sounds a lot like Swedish...

Porthole, you must have some real pirating experience. Or maybe a pirating dictionary. Anyway, those are very good posts, and very funny.
