I just recieved a buffing arbor from StewMac - does anyone know of a good source for used or cheap electirc motors to drive this thing? I checked with the local appliance store to see about old washing machine motors: they said most newer washers didn't have a shaft to put a pully on. They gave me an old two speed motor (1725 abd 1140) but I have no idea how to wire it. It has a yellow, orange, and blue wire plus two white and one white with gren stripes. Any suggestions? It also looks like it will be very difficult to mount- no base.

                Thanks, Paul

Paul check your yellow pages under Electric Motors. Some of them will no doubt sell refurbished totally fan enclosed (TFEP) motors at a fraction of the cost of a new one. I picked up a 1/3 hp 1725 Baldor for my buffer and 1725 1 hp for my thickness sander this way.

Or you can check eBay -- usually lots for sale there.

Best,

Anthony

Time to pay your local scrap metal merchant a visit.

About twenty years ago I worked in a scrap metal yard, we'd get guys coming in and buying stuff like that all the time.

e bay -- just a couple of weeks ago i needed a new motor for my buffer -- the ancient one gave up the ghost. i bought a new dayton tefc, explosion proof, for less than $6.00 plus the shipping.

You might have a used machinery dealer in town. Here in Ohio I am able to get good quality used motors for $15-25 at a used machinery dealder. Ebay is also a good source.

Paul, since I don't know a thing about US geography, please forgive my ignorance.

Do you have farms in Pittsboro? Surly there are some farm equipment type places where you could find a used motor kicking around.

Or do you have MCC in your town. Fot those that don't know, it's the Mennonite Central Committee, they have thrift stores all over the place. Anyway, the one in my town usually has 3 or 4 used motors for about $10-$15 for 1/5th hp and a little more for larger sizes. You could check out your local thrift shops.
