I just started watching this weekends Handmade music. They're following a Gruhn guitar tech repairing a 30's D-18. Pretty interesting the guy used an espresso machine with the steamer running through a tube and a big needle to heat up the glue to remove the neck. Pretty interesting.    

Seems like the moisture would cause damage though. nathan c39006.8367939815

Nay, I think that's probably the most common steam 'generator' you'll find in repair shops...

The moisture is just temporary. It's the long term exposures that aren't good (dry or wet)...

I would have never thought of it. Ever. It's just too simple . The show was pretty good. The repairman reset the neck, replaced the bridge support and made a new bridge for it.

By the way. If you've never been to Gruhn's, it is awesome. I'm 2hrs away from Nashville, and each time I go I try to go to Gruhn's. $10k guitars within reach. Pretty neat.

years ago we all used pressure cookers as out steam generators. big, heavy, cumbersome, needed a separate hotplate. pia!

the little domestic espresso machines were a boon, though sometimes you have to refill them on difficult necks.

and steaming can result in colateral damage, particularly with laminated b&s, connection to the neck block, and fiish blushes if you are not careful.

Here's what I use.I found it at a thrift shop here for 8 bucks. It does the job. Stew-Mac sells a hose and needle for it.
