Some time ago I found a site that sold a drill press aparatus that allowed you to use a hand held electric drill as a drill press. Does anybody know where to find it? Has anybody used one? Thanks, Bob J. |

Bob, I've had one over in the UK for many years. In fact I keep my old Black & Decker drill in it permanently. However, It is not stable and accurate enough for me ever to let it near any of my precious lutherie wood. For that there is no substitute for a good heavy bench or floor mounted dedicated drill, as heavy and with as big a pillar and table as you can get. Colin |

I had an OLD OLD Craftsman bench model, paid seventy five bucks for it. Then let it go with some other equipment, and I missed it from day one. I then found the same machine only a floor model, 125 bucks. I'll say this, about a good drill press, "It's one of the few tools I will not be without." It's definitely a luthier's tool. |

Bob, you might check at the Sears Craftsman site. I purchased a couple on eBay. Now the caveat, I agree that it can't match up to a benchtop drill press. The better model Craftsman made was the "Dual Position Universal Drill Press model # 925923. I broke one of mine trying to press frets and realized that all the internal gears are nylon, not real durable. I'd suggest that you look for a ryobi or delta benchtop drill press. If you plan to do any soundhole inlay work using the drill press, be sure that it has at least a 12" swing. Sorry I can't give you a more positive review. Hope this helps. |
