Hey everyone! I haven't been here in a while, but a pressing question needs your know-how.

I'd like to make my own attachments for a dremel and I was wondering if anyone knows the threads per inch (if that is what its called) and pitch that they use? Basically I just want to know if there is a tap out there that will tap out threads for some dremel attachment ideas I have.

Anyone done this before?

I'm pretty sure it's a 1-8 (one inch diameter, 8 threads per inch) standard pitch tap. The tap is generally a custom order and danged expensive for the amount of use it will get. The more commonly available 1-9 tap will not work.

I've heard of an alternate solution using epoxy to cast the threads in place.

Bore a hole with a diameter just a little bigger than the threaded area of the Dremel. Rig a temporary jig to hold the Dremel in the center of the hole, grease the Dremel's threads well with a release agent, stick it in the hole, fill with epoxy. When the epoxy sets, unscrew the Dremel and there you go.

At least thats the way it goes if the release agent works!

I've used Dennis's method in different circumstances many times and it does work. Mainly I've used something similar when bedding rifle actions into stocks using Devcon epoxy resins. Taking a $1000 rifle action and squeezing it into epoxy in a $1000 stock does take some nerve and you always worry that you didn't fill a screw hole with plasticine, but it has always released just fine. You can buy special release agents but I have always had my best success with ordinary Bees Wax polish. Maybe if you know someone will a junker dremel to use as the male mould?

If it sticks you can always put it in the freezer,for a while to get some differential contraction.

3/4 - 12 is the size.
M-20 would also do, well almost.

I remember reading somewhere (mimf?) that the M-20 is good because it's a little bit tighter. If you're tapping into wood the tighter thread will compress a little when the dremel is screwed in and you end up with a nice snug fit.

I remember all this 'cause I was going to do it, until I saw the price of those taps
