I remember some time ago Bruce Dickey made a post about how to flatten cupped boards by adding water to one side causing it to reverse cup. My question is what side ? Is it this side -> ) or ) < ----- that side ![]() Thanks! |

Thanks Bob, so is the idea to swell the fibers on that side and cause it to expand? |

well the fibers on that side and cause it to expand? Yup. But afterwards, remember to sticker and weigh it down so that it remains flat as it dries. If the cupping isn't too severe, you can also try the reverse, and that is to dry the convex side. |

For what it's worth, I remember this by realizing that we are expanding the cells on one side of the piece by adding H2O. Works the opposite way (shrinks cells) if you apply dry air to the opposite side. |

By the way, it worked like a charm! My problem was small, I couldnt get the cupped board flat to my joiner blade. Added a tad of water and with in 10 minuts it was flat... |

On a related note, I have a set of coco where the back plates are cupped. If I joined them now, one side cups one way and the other gos the other way. Should I get the cupping under control and let sit stickered for a while before joining or can you work with them right away? Won't they give you trouble down the road or is the back bracing enough to keep it where you want it? Thanks guys, Wade |

Man guys, thanks. This thread inspired me to salvage a really cool set of French walnut I got from Larry Davis a couple years ago. There's still enough size to it to have a guitar, but I'll have to bend back the sides. What's worried me has been the warped back. |
