Hi everyone... Just wanted to update on the Silvertone and ask a favor... The silvertone refret is actually going much better now that I followed the advice of this forum and used a bead of water on the frets when heating to lessen chipout. GREAT idea folks! :-) I got the fingerboard radiused to 20' (and I think I aggravated an allergy to this dust in the meantime... my face looks like I was slapped by Big Bird) and will be refretting real soon (going to order my fret press today... I'd just feel safer pressing rather than hammering). Now, this one has a weird style bridge in it... it's a floating bridge with a piece of fretwire (ARRRGHHH!!!) for a saddle. I want to keep it as original as possible, but I do want to lower the action and not ruin the original bridge. That said, I was hoping there might be a kind member here who has some scrap ebony or similar wood who wouldn't mind parting with it for a fair price... if it's 3/4"-1" by 3/4"-1" square, that would be perfect... I only need a piece about 5 inches long to replicate this bridge so I won't risk damaging the original. Heck, if someone had 2 pieces of that wood, that would give me a backup just in case I messed the first one up... Anyways, like I said, any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance everyone!

glad the water trick worked for you. there are some who use naphta to the same end, but i've always found the water works well for me. togeter with the heat from the iron it makes the wood flexible enoough to reduce the chip out greatly. i should have mentioned not to begin lifting the fret until the steam rises, but i guess you discovered that on your own.
