I have a question in regard to veneers also if I may impose on your thread.   Wondering if anyone might know of a source for exotic veneers in approx. .060 to .125 thickness?
I've been resawing headstock covers out of blocks of quilted, spalted, burled etc but would rather buy to thickness ready to use.

Them's called tonewoods at those thicknesses....

Then only veneer you'll find that thick is rotary cut,and you don't want that stuff.

Nelson the only thing I've seen approaching 0.06" thickness is some birdseye maple veneer I purchased from Unicorn Universal here in Toronto.

I also picked up some 0.06" flatsawn curly maple veneer at a wood show but don't recall the vendor.

Guess I need to buy some exotic fretboard blanks and resaw for bookmatch. Probably woulnd't find much in burled or spalted though, huh?

Seems like most headplates quit at about 8" length where I need 9" minimum for the backplate to carry thru the headstock/neckshaft transition area. (aka volute area)

Perhaps I need to talk to the Zootman and see if he'll cut some special for me.

You could also laminate your thinner veneers; use the same wood from the same cuts, and just use plan 'ol titebond, and nobody will know the better....

I know you're looking for veneers, but if it's for making your own purfling etc, Gurian carries a bunch of black, maple, holly, etc. combinations. If you look in their clearance section, they have a ton in all different sizes and color combinations, and it's REALLY cheap.
