My best classical ever was made of Spanish Cypress..., and Jose Romanillos and Richard Brune have both said they prefer it for a classical but everyone thinks its a flamenco. [the wood is approached differently then if one were making a flamenco guitar, of course.] Spanish Cypress is also has a very beautiful smell. Second to that, I really like Madagascar Rosewood which can still be obtained in very high quality. Regards, Joshua French |

Ok, sign me up for Koa. I've used that more than anything, and just love the way it looks. And, it sells itself. Soundwise, I prefer a rosewood, but that's the guitarist talking...not the builder. |

Againk not built much yet, but I do quite love the EIR. Simple, clean, beautiful, bends so, so easily (Khaya's less fun in that respect). I'm particularly looking forward to trying out the Madagascar Rosewood and the Black Acacia I've got, and particularly fearing (but looking forward to) the Macassar Ebony sets.. Oh! And Cocobolo. And Bob's gorgeous Walnut. I'm such a wood Junkie. |

OK, you've guessed it my favourite is Cuban Mahogany. If I couldn't get that then I would be perfectly happy with Small leaf mahogany, Sapele or the Acacias, Koa and Australian Black. These are, of course, for the sound I like. Now if we're talking looks, I still think Brazilian Rosewood is the winner. Colin |

Cherry, I'm the odd ball here but what else is new? I like the looks of Austrailian Blackwood, Zircote, Braz and Madagascar. My olfactory senses like Braz, Cherry and Madagascar in that order, wafting in the shop. |

I like Walnut too. The smell is like no other. I need to build a few more guitars to get a better sense of "best" though. My favorite sounding Guitar is made of Black Acacia. I'm looking to get more of that stuff. Wade |

Jimmie & Wade: I knew there had to be someone out there that actually like the smell of Walnut but TWO People? 
I have difficulty with it. It seems as though the micro dust just hangs in the air for hours and it really chokes me up. I guess the smell isn't THAT bad, it's just the dust that gives me fits. |

Me too, I hadn't cut any walnut in a long time but recently started using it as part of my neck construction and some other trim. It is a very strong odor and I like the way it smells. |

I think my favorite wood is Santa Domingan Mahogany. Or perhpas Koa, or maybe Brazilian Rosewood. Padouk and Imbuya are both very nice and so is sapele, especially that fantastically quilted stuff Bob C. has. I love the way a nice straight grained well quartered Honduduras Rosewood looks and sounds. Heck I have a set of curly white oak that I think would make a great instrument, and I agree with all you Walnut fans. Walnut is great! Does not matter which coast it comes from. Smells good, looks good, sounds good. My favorite quote from my mentor Wade Lowe, "if God made a better wood than walnut He kept if for His own shop" |

Ever since I was in high school shop class I have always loved the smell and look of walnut. Even now when I look at tonewood web suppliers, the first thing I look for is culy walnut. I probably need to expand my horizons some though. I have used EI on one and Honduran Magog on another. |
