My wonderful 9ft x 14" cherry I scored from seemingly yonkers ago has been kindly re-sawn to size by a good pal....I only managed to extract a mando and guitar's worth (and a couple of necks) out of it due to knots, etc, but it was worth it. The tap tone is already amazing.

Looks like the rest will be for carving.

I cannot wait to get to work on it...

My question is, has anyone got photos of guitars they may have made with 3 peice backs, please? I just need to get some ideas...

I remember thast Lars Rasmussen posted a very gorgeous guitar with a 3 piece BRW set here this year!

Sam, I have seen backs that were three and four pieces of the same wood. The four piece was kind of cool, in that you weren't really sure it was four pieces because of the bookmatching. The three piece back was obvious, but look great anyway. I have also seen three piece backs that the center piece was a different type of wood. That was really interesting. I like the visual, but would have loved to hear the sound.

Yeah, that's exactly why I am researching the different visual elements...I have enough back pieces to either match the grain in, or have a contrasting middle stripe.

Sam...Check out the D-35 by Martin. It has always had a 3 piece back. The middle wedge is tastefully separated by fine purfling. That's just one way folks have handled the issue.

You're right about some having used a different center wood. Were it I, I would stick with the same wood or else choose a different wood with similar properties especially when it comes to expansion and contraction.

Good luck...looking forward to seeing how you pull this off. I want to go the same way on a future build.

Here is a 4 piece back I'm working on now.

I know its not a three piece back, but it may give you some perspective on how subtle a four piece can be.

Hi Sam,

I did a Resonator guitar last year that has a 3-piece back. It's flamed maple with a bridseye maple center section.
Here's a pic in the white:



And here's a pic after I applied too much stain in the finish.

Don, that is a REALLY beautiful guitar back, a great example of letting the grain dominate the design. Great choice of back strips..anything else would have ruined it!

Beautiful, Don. What did you use for the lines between the flame and birdseye? It's a perfect choice. BTW, I like the dark stain. Maple can look cold, but yours looks warm and cozy--reminds me of spiced drinks and warm fires in the winter.
