That black Acacia sure looks nice. What is the laminate on the neck? What wood is the center laminate? |

My goodness Don, you've been keeping the elves busy. Fantastic work, isn't that wood beautiful. Great execution too. Can you make it howl? How would you describe the sound? ![]() |

Paul, the laminated neack is Mahogany/Maple/EIRW. Come out to the NEL meeting this coming Sunday...I'll have it with me. Can I make it howl? I'm lucky to make it bark or whimper.... The sound is everything you would expect to hear from a sitka/koa guitar. It's very bright, yet has solid mids and lows. Hard to describe unless you've heard that combination...then you would know what that means. Is that vague enough? ![]() |

Very nice Don, I like the light matching colored headstock too. Did ya sweat doing that inlay? Sure would like to hear that thing. |

Thanks all for the kind comments... John, The inlay was done by cnc...so not much sweat on my part. All my guitars going forward have headplates and pearl cut with a laser by Gurian Instruments. Hey Don Atwood....I like your new avatar much better. Love cats. Hate spiders. |

Love that black acasia Don. Very beautiful guitar. Is that finish KTM-9? |
Author: | Don Williams [ Sun Feb 06, 2005 11:25 pm ] |
Post subject: | |
Yes KTM-9....I wish I could have captured the reflection better, but alas, my photography is somewhat lacking. The finish is very very glossy, and I doubt most folks could distinguish between this and a decent lacquer job. |

Thanks again for the kind words... Now for your questions... Trent, you have no idea how much I'd like to yank down that tree...but not for guitar wood... Dave, I really like Maccassar ebony. The stripey look is very different, and pretty cool so long as you don't throw a bunch of dots and inlay on there. That would be too much on the eyes, I think. Roy, I'll try to get a sound clip somehow...but not sure how! Wade, I'll have it at the NEL meeting this Sunday...see you there! |

I am building with the Black Acacia set I got from you as we speak. I hope to be done in 2 months if the weather cooperates. It rained again this weekend. It is hard for me to justify to the wife the expense of humidity control when 9 out of 10 years I don't have to worry with it. But this year it has been a bugger |

Good work Don. Very nice shape and beautiful wood. How does it sound? John |
How does it sound?
O.k., maybe not. It's very bright, a tad brassy, but there's plenty of low end. It's got a very stiff sitka top on it, so I expect it to take some time to open up. In general it's pretty well balanced, even though it's a tad brassy. I'm not real great at describing sound, because everyone hears and describes things differently. Hey...where's Lance today? |

Is that like "jumbo shimp"? Or "sweet and sour"? ![]() Sorry, I couldn't resist. We classical players know only one size (of guitar!) Steve Brown |
