where does the class take place/cost? and is it somthing a newbie would benfit from or is it for advanced builders?

A newbie would benefit, but I've heard that the people that get the most out of the class have a few guitars under their belt. The class is about voicing, not construction.
Contact Ervin Somogyi about prices and dates. This year's class is in February. He has been known to do another one if the February class fills.

I'm planning on taking it some day, but I'm holding off until I feel like I've got pretty good control over all the "mechanicals" of guitar building (i.e. woodworking techniques, etc).

Ok... you guys are preempting me just a touch. V-V-V-Very soon Ervin is going to be joining us for a few days to give us a nice write up of his class, and we will be showcasing an overview presentation of the class. Probably with some video support.

This will give you a very good glimpse into what you will learn in the class and a peek at his methodology. The presentation will be valuable unto itself, but is a far cry from the "real thing."

Our hope is it will teach you something useful, AND provide the info you need to make a decision on taking the course.

His class is very intense, it goes from morning until about 6 or so, then you spend the evening scratching your head and working on excercises into the night.

We could not even begin to scratch the surface of what is learned in the class within the medium of an online forum, but suffice it to say that once you have been your building will never be the same.

It is revolutionary. I had so many "AH HA" moments I can't even tell you.

It is something you definitely should try to do if you can.

With regard to how much experience you need. I would say you for sure need a few guitars under your belt. One of the most productive excercises in the class is to have Ervin and the class talk about your guitars and "listen" to them. After a week of intense study this is really an eye opening experience too. I realize that is a humbling experience to hand "the master" your instrument. But screw up your courage and do it. It will advance your building immeasurably. Everyone is very positive and kind. Nobody walks away feeling that they have been whipped. It is very constructive.

We have a few logistical issues to work out on this presentation. I expect that it will get started next week and go for a week or two.

Thank you very much guys. I've been interested in Ervin's methods for ages.

I'd love to do the course, but then I'd have to pay airfares to the other side of the planet on top of the course fees. Try getting that past the missus. I keep on buying those lottery tickets tho.....

One thing that does save on $$ (I realize this is an expensive proposition) is he will let you bunk in his shop. This sounds kind of weird, but (virtually) everyone in the class did it and it gave lots of time for bonding and checking out jigs and stuff. It was ok and saved a bunch of money on a hotel. Muriel Anderson even stopped by one evening and managed to bring out her guitars and play a tune or two. His shop is a house in Oakland CA and I slept in a room filled floor to ceiling with BRW. It smelled GREAT!!!!

Sounds like a truly awesome class. I've e-mailed Ervin, and while I would
love to take the class, it is way beyond my means financialy . No doubt it is
worth it though and I deeply envy you all who get to go. I look forward to
the small bit that he does present here.
