I am about to install ivoroid binding around my granadillo guitar. It does not have any lines attached.
How do you attach lines to the ivoroid and then have it to bend around the body of the guitar. I would like to do b/w/b. I have used these as purfling and they bend in that plane easily, but it seems that they might not bend in the plane with the binding as easily. If this is not do-able, do you know of a source that has ivoroid with b/w/b already attached? I hope my question is clear. thanks, Tom Harbin

I tape all my side purflings together and bend them to shape on my side bender and install them at the same time I install the binding, If I was doing the binding you plan. However I do not use any synthetic bindings on my guitars so in reality, since I use only wood bindings I laminate the purflings to my binding then bend together but that will not work with ivroid so you have to bend the pufling and install both the bind and purfing at the same time.MichaelP39066.5672916667

Or you could bend your purfling, Install them by themself, allow the glue to set. Clean up the channel and install the ivroid

You can bend plastic by hand to the form of your guitar and glue it in under your bindings during glue up.

Or (and this is how I do it) I bend everything first, and tack glue my miters in place first, then glue up the rest of the bindings. That way you don't have to hurry so much while you are fitting the miters.

You can buy bindings with the side pieces already laminated on. You can get them at axinc.net and I think StewMac may carry them as well.

Good luck.

Stewmac does not sell ivorid any more tho, at least they don't ship it. I think axinc / Bill James will even make custom laminations for you.

I have tried a few different methods of installing side purflings. On my last instrument I taped everything up unglued and separate. I liked the luxury of not having to hurry and the purfling miters being independent of the bindings. When everything was to my satisfaction and taped well in position I lightly glued with CA.

Michael, Brock, & Arnt, thanks for the suggestions.
I think I will try a dry run first on a test model with Arnt's suggestion. Does CA hold the ivoroid well?
thanks, Tom

Yes, CA works with ivorid. A couple of things you to be aware of with CA: A little goes a long way! Be very careful if the binding rabbet cuts through the kerfed lining exposing the guitar's interior; CA can make a mess if allowed to seep in. Seal the rabbet with shellac before you tape the binding in place; CA can soak into end grain and discolor your top.Arnt39066.668287037
