I get way too excited about burl woods. Too bad you could not make a top out of it.
At least we can dress up a guitar with it.

Bob, Are you sure that isn’t a pic of Mt. Saint Helens eruption close up?
We should have Figured You would come up with something.
And what wood would that be?

Wade,
That is a realy beautiful rosette. I love stuff like that. I have to start making my own rosettes. BobC - your pic didn't load for me just got an "x" but I am willing to bet it is every bit as beautiful as all the other stuff you sell. please email me.

Darn it! You gotta stop doing that, Bob. My bank account can't take it!

(ok, so I'm lying about the first part. Keep doing what you're doing!)

Thanks Dave,
I’ve been getting more inventive with inlay, rosettes and end graft etc.
It helps to have some cool wood to work with. I’ll have to ask Bob C. if he can put a grab bag of figured pieces together for me..

Well Bob, that there's some kind of cool wood there, eh?

Wade, absolutely stunning work, a man could get insanely jealous of ability like that!

Wade,

I'm with Colin, that is a beautiful rosette! How was it made?

I started with a sandwich of Black Acacia, dark rosewood and maple. This was inspired by a demo Alan Carruth gave at one of the NEL meetings. I intended to try to build a rosette similar to his basket-weave rosette, without infringing on his trademark. If any of you have seen Alan’s rosettes you must appreciate the complexity of his designs.
For this rosette however, I used the flywheel cutter to cut one ring of cherry burl. I used cuts of the sandwich to interrupt the burl in 12 places. If I were transferring the rosette directly to the top, I would cut one edge of the burl and cut into the top with the tool set in the same spot. Then change for the inside cut and cut both again. I made the cutter tool so it cuts at a width closely matching the width of two purfling strips. That way, I just add the strips to snug up the rosette. The trick is to cut the burl pieces the correct length. If you start with a good plan and leave a little room to sand snug, you should end up with a tight rosette.

Thanks Wade, I however will have absolutely no compunction in copying your method! Now that you've described it, it doesn't make it any less stunning workmanship. Expect to see similar on one of my future projects. (I've got some nice burr Yew on the shelf)

Don, Yes I’ll do that.

Colin, It is great to write up a quick technical explanation for something and have people actually “get it”. When you make that rosette, I’d love to see it.

Thanks for the kind words Bob and Jeff.

Wade
