I'm thinking I don't care for the "auto" censorship of the bad word filter. It removes parts of words that are not necessarily a bad word.
So I would like the input of the OLF body.

Should I turn it off or leave it on?

If I turn off this filter, you can expect Ill EDIT your post if there (IS) a bad word posted. And I would expect YOU to understand.

That said, I think most folks would agree we don't care for cussin around here.

Vote and tell me what you think.

Thanks

Hasn't been a big problem yet.

Sometimes your bad word filter makes for some funny post's but I'm for turning it off.

I'm for turning it off too. If it gets to be a problem you can always turn it back on.

You could turn it off for word clarity. I hope that it doesn't cause you any grief, having to edit, if there is an infraction. The members should already no "that there shouldn't be no cussin' round these here parts". And as Roy said, you can always flip the switch back on.

Lance,

I don't like swearing, it just shows a lack of vocabulary, but I don't think an automatic filter is necessary. I've always found that if you treat people as adults they tend to act adult. And Lance, as moderator you have complete authority over anything that appears on the forum, I'm sure that if anyone does overstep the mark a quite word to their private messenger will have it sorted.

Mind you I'll have no problem, as some time ago Steve Kinnaird gave me full permission to cuss in Latin! And I'm sure Mattia'a got some choice Dutch.

I have several languages to choose from, but I'll tend to resort to comic book spelled swearing if at all, and even then only if I've done something phenomenally idiotic and I'm mad at myself ;-)

Lance, thought I think we all should be old enough to know better, it really only takes one idiot to start using foul language to ruin it for everyone.
BUT I voted to turn it off as I think we all can sort of "self police" the forum. If someone sees something that we don't think it appropriate, we can notify you and you can shut it down.
Besides there are ways around it, such as C*R*A*P. The bad word still gets posted and other things are filtered improperly like in Steve's Acacia post.
My $.02 says turn it off and see how it goes. Paul

Well, I [beep] think there must be some [beep] other way of keeping folks from using them [bad word] curse words.

Of course I didn't actually attempt a bad word in there, it was just for fun. I don't swear normally, and especially not in writing.

Why not lets make up a word that isn't a curse that we can use in replacement, like the old Battlestar Gallactica's "Felgerkarb"...that could make it sort of a fun way of policing ourselves.

Lance I would be for turning it off. If someone isn't mature enough to keep comments clean, then can you block them. Everyone here so far has been respectful of the rule and others. If not and they get blocked off, we probably don't need them around anyway.

I'm undecided, I shudder at the though of my daughter (she's only two now) being exposed to some of the garbage that's on the internet as she grows up, and I think that some form of censorship needs to be implimented.

But perhaps this isn't the place to start. I don't have a problem with it being left on. But if you turn it off, you can always ban people who refuse to follow the rules.

Post subject:

Paul I hear what your saying but you've got a real uphill battle keeping your daughter from reading/seeing things you don't approve of if your letting her use the computer unsupervised..

I'd recommend something like netnanny or similar software that censor content on your end.

I personally think we should turn off the [bad word] censor because it's [bad word] annoying

Hi Lance and Fellow OLFites,

I think it's important for everyone to exercise good judgment and express themselves in a respectful manner that is consistent with Forum rules. However, since you are the person who will have to police the site if you turn off the automatic-bad-word-filter, I think it is really your decision. Do you want to take the time to deal with it or have it dealt with automatically?

Best regards,
Viv

Cheers!

Lance, I voted "yes" with some hesitation. I'm afraid it will mean more police work for you. Like said above, this is your place, and if anyone gets out of line, you could give them a friendly warning, then break their kneecaps. Or be your genteel self and rap them on their knuckles.

or you could just start censoring all sort of words. I mean like "killer"
"tonewood" "neck" "bridge" and replace them with funny words and that
way we can hav a "Mad-Libs" sorta forum. Not that it would be of any
help to anyone but it would be funny.

ok nevermind it actually had some cussin.. but I'll throw a snippet of it up
here.. it is from www.gizoogle.com this is a translated snippet of lance's

Lance,
Why not do a 30 or 60 or 90 day trial run and see how it goes. If it is more trouble than it is worth to leave it off then flip the swich back on again. I think that there are enough people that do not want to read vulgarity around here, that if anyone got out of hand we would pound em'
