Well it was my anniversary this past week and of course like all good husbands, I got my wife a dozen roses.

We we got home and were putting the roses in a vase, I was looking at those little tubes that they put the stems in so they stay hydrated.

Well, I was looking at them, thinking, "those might be good for freezing hide glue" They come with the little cap and I thought, you could just put 4 layers of plastic over the top and it would seal good.

The other nice thing is that for us hobby builders who don't use much of the stuff, this allows you to make up a fair amount but just use a small amount at a time.

So that's what I did.

here are some pics of the process.

First I cleaned out the tube. Than I made a board to hold the tubes while filling and letting the glue gel.

While I was doing this, the glue was soaking up the water and getting ready to cook.

Once the glue was all dissolved and cooked, I poured it into the tubes and let it sit to gel.

That was in the afternoon, so this evening when the glue had gelled, I cut up some pieces of plastic (4 total as the covering) and placed the little cap over top.

Next into the freezer they go till I need some more glue. If I need a little, I'll take one tube and it will give me about 3/4 oz of glue. I can pop them out of the tube and put them in my little 3 oz bottle, or just heat up the tube and pour it into the little bottle.

So go on out and get that special someone some roses (Hesh, pick up a nice ring too ), It'll give you some needed WAS points and some freezer tubes for the hide glue.

What happens if one has a few girlfriends?... I know! Build more guitars to use up more glue... Giggidy Giggidy!

Alain...If you have multiple girlfriends, you have no time for building!

Be very careful, my friend...too much of a good thing can be dangerous!

Pardon my ignorance here, but... You can freeze hide glue? If so this is a great idea. I was just mixing it up and storing in the refridgerator. Problem is it would mold before I could use it all. Looks like problem solved. Thnx for a great idea.

I pour mine into an old ice cube tray, then when gelled put the cubes of glue into a freezer bag, suck out the air, then into a second bag and stick it it the freezer. It freezes well as long as you get the air out to stop freezer burn.

Oh, I make mine up on the thick side so that when defrosted I can add the amount of extra water I want for the particular gluing job.

Seem like, with all that water in the mixture, there might be enough expansion to burst those tubes as it freezes, or at least pop the tops off. Might need to reseal the tops after it freezes.

May need to put them in a zip lock bag to prevent freezer burn.

I was wondering about that as well Ron. I just checked them and none of them have burst and only a couple have even raised the cap, but didn't pop them off. I made sure not to fill right to the top, rather leave a little (very little infact) room for some expansion. Seems to be ok.

I may take them out of the tube and double freezer bag them like Colin.

Here's another idea: How about pouring the glue into a plastic ice cube tray, freezing it, then emptying the blocks into freezer bags?
