Having heard his CD's and seen some videos on the net, his concert significantly exceeded my expectations.

I met up with John How at the Big Room at the Sierra Nevada Brewery (John's favorite beer) in Chico, CA. We had front row, center seats...everything perfect.

He performed for 3 hours and just blew the roof off the building. This was not only the best guitar performance I've ever seen, it was also the most exciting and hard working performer I've ever seen. He is unique in his ability to connect with his audience and project a feeling that he is having as much fun performing as his audience is listening.

His guitars are Australian-made Maton and some of the ugliest instruments I've ever seen...finish worn and blistered from the drumming and scraping on the sutface to produce sounds never intented to come from a guitar. But, OH, the sounds...and the speed and complexity of 10 fingers moving all over strings as if each had a brain of its own.

What a talent, performer and gentleman. I swear he must have sold his soul to be able to play so well. He attributes his inspiration to Chet Atkins and did a fantastic tribute to him.

I highly recommend seeing him if you get a chance.

Excuse me now while I go out and burn all of my guitars...I'm not worthy!

JJ,

I couldn't agree with you more. I have seen Tommy play 4 times now (twice in Colorado, twice in The Netherlands), and he is the consummate showman. His guitar skills are UNBELIEVEABLE.

I have spoken with him on 3 of these occasions, and even had a few beers with him after a couple of the shows. He is a truly gracious person, and very accessible.

Unfortunately, I didn't have any guitars in stock the last time I met him, but he offered to have me bring some along next time to play them and give me feedback on them.

You can't ask for more than that! :)

He is so in tune with his calling that I could not imagine him doing anything else. It was incredible. It must be seen to be believed and funny too. He would be a guitar makers dream because there would be no concern or sweating over getting a flawless finish, in fact I think he would probably prefer just a couple brush coats of shellac before he starts scratching it off. He played an OM sized guitar for most of the show but also played a cutaway dread and an SJ size guitar as well, all from Maton. Can't wait till next time.
