Beautiful work, Pete. Thanks for the pics. Q: Do you bolt on your necks? If you do, I'm wondering how you get access to the bolts- the soundwell really takes up a good chunk of room in the body. Cheers John |

John, I use a dovetail for the biscuit bridge instruments because, as you say, the soundwell (and the fixed neck stick that I use) gets in the way. For spider bridge instruments I use a bolt-on neck, Cumpiano-style, because I build those with support posts instead of a soundwell so there's plenty of access room inside. The other alternative for biscuit bridge would be to build it like the metal-bodied ones where the neck stick is attached to the neck, fits though a hole at the neckblock and the whole thing screws together through the tailpiece, soundwell and fingerboard. The way I build them kind of evolved gradually so now I tend to stick with what I know and am geared up for, although it would be an interesting exercise to do it the other way one day. I try to avoid experimenting on paying customers, though! |

I've used bolt on's for the couple I've made. I drilled a half inch hole in the front of the sound well so I can run my long allen wrench through there to attach the neck. I could manage with a smaller hole, but the half inch didn't seem to compromise the structure and it's nice to have the wiggle room. Kent |

Very nice Pete! I use a combo neck-stick and bolt on. The stick is fixed and then dog-legs when it gets near the neck block enough to get the bolts in. |

Alright Pete! Great looking guitar. I always wait with anticipation for your posts. Glad to see you "woke up" the Resonator Forum again. What are your thoughts on necks for the resonator. Finally got one going last week, and am especially determined after going to a jam last week. I'm laminating a neck using flame maple with a figured walnut pc down the middle. Using Sapele for the body. It'll be a square neck. Kicking around using just mahogany lam neck too. I've got a 8/4 x 10" wide pc of mahogany that I haven't used yet. Dave |

I usually laminate my necks and for a squareneck I usually put a couple of carbon fibre rods in too just to be on the safe side. Having said that, my first dobro was a Lebeda with a one-piece mahogany neck and it's still going strong without any problems so I don't think there's necessarily any great structural advantage in laminating. When I'm laminating I usually use contrasting woods, like your maple and walnut, but that's only because I like the look of it. |

As I think you know, I've been collecting parts to make a few reso's shortly. At the GAL Convention last week, I was a bit dissapointed to only find a couple of makers with reso's there. I had a great conversation with one of them and gleaned a great deal of information that will help me get my first couple right first time! I'll be starting to build the first two very shortly now.
