Post subject:  National Neck Set

Hi - Looking to earn how a neck set is done on a National Steel round neck. Haven't found anything on this forum or on the web yet.

Anybody know where I could find this info? Thanks

Check at the MIMF. I think there is a write-up in the library.

I have restored a '30 tri cone and a '35 or so Trojan (wood bodied)
Unfortunately I only took a few photos of each under restoration.
A metal body nat is pretty much banjo construction with a neck stick mortised into the actual neck, which runs the length of the body and is held in place by mushroom pillars and the end pin screw.
I assume you're talking about a metal body so here goes:
Remove all the cones and covers.
Pop the mushroom suport pilars, remove the end pin screw and the little blocks glued to the neck stick up at the heastock end, remove the inlay dots and the screws and nuts through the body and work the neck free from the body.

On mine the neck stick was warped, so I steamed it apart and replaced it.

The Cantilevered portion of the fingerboard was warped, so I made a wafer of Carbon Fiber and let it into the back of the fingerboard. The binding covered the edges

While I was at it I made a shim, bound it with Ivroid and put between the heel and the body to correct the intonation. Not vintage, but now the guitar plays in tune.

The neck set is a function of the mushroom pillars and finally held in place with the end pin screw.

Sorry the pics are in reverse order. I'm not too good at this pic posting thing.

Hope this helps.

Is it a Style O or a Tricone?

Sometimes you have to recut the stick angles if you have the room and maybe shimn under the FB tongue. There's also a method of cutting the stick and removing a wedge at the top of it and gluing it into the cut to correct the neck angle. Not to sure you want to be doing necksets on resos until you know how they are constructed though.
