20 programs? good grief! this sounds like a lotta work. doesn't your machine have cutter comp?

Yes, it does. The Haas controller calls this a system variable and by the time I enter the correct D geometry offset into the g-code at the correct place....I could have written a bunch of these types of programs at the computer. You have to keep in mind that fitting operations often come at the end of a number of other operations. Just FINDING the right place to enter the geometry offset can take a while in that situation.

In MasterCam you just copy, paste, and change a value.....it takes about 5 seconds. Of course I just SAID 20. These days I pretty much know where the fit is going to take place so I write maybe 6 or 8 of them to make sure I'm covered.

what model year haas is this?
when I program a pocket, and posting for a haas, i'll basically rough out the pocket leaving about .005 per side. then i'll program a contour routine to bring the pocket to size. now using the wear value column on the tool offset page, it's extremely easy to creep upon a pocket dimension (checking of course with the insert). just enter a negative amount in the column and push cycle start. run... and test the fit with the insert, repeat etc...until you get the desired fit. I'm assuming some things of course:

1) in your software (mastercam etc...) you've chosen to offset the cutter path to the left (G41)
2) your arc in/arc out moves are greater then the cutter diameter.
3) H and T agreement is on (setting 15 for mocon 3.9 and above)
4) in the cutter offset page tool dia. should be set to zero.

fwiw, you can if you want, but you don't need to change the diameterical offset number within your program if T, D, and H are the same like T01, D01, H01, just input a negative value into the offset page. for onesey's and twosey's or very tight work, this is what I'll do. for full on production, I'll just make the pocket routine with cutter comp on, check the first part, make an adjustment in the wear column, set it, run again, check the dimensions, and leave it.

Or you can program multiple finish passes with a full retract between them and just hit feed hold when it's up to check fit. If it still doesn't fit, then let it take another pass. If I'll use it twice then I'll put actual M1 or M0 pauses in there so I don't need to stay alert, but if it's a one-use program then it's me and the feed hold button.
