i've tried paying two professional luthiers for set ups on separate occassiions, but neither have intoned my guitar (a 1968 gibson es 335 which i am the original owner) as perfectly as the late jim d'aquisto had. at this point i'm ready to consider doing my own setups. i'm overdue by about at least 5 years at this point. any suggestions of who can intone my instrument as well as jimmy d'aquisto? if not how i would attempt it (i've been told by everybody that i possess excellent pitch) thanks!

hi Richard,
it sounds like you seem to understand what is involved in good setup work, but then you ask how you would attempt it. there's a lot to it, you know that, and you're not going to get a thoroughly explanation in this thread, adequate enough to impart to you all the subtleties involved, especially at the level of excellence your fingers and ears require.

plus, I doubt any of us would be capable of even lacing Jimmy's shoes. I'm not worthy!

but anyhow, regardless of whether or not you wind up doing your own set up work, you are interested, and you should pick up these books.

i think i'll do both - take my guitar to evan for a pro setup and read up on doing some small maintenances between annual pro setups. As far as doing small maintenances such as cleaning, how many parts naptha to water should i use to clean my guitar? i've already tried two different guitar cleaning products from the local music stores neither of which were able to remove the hazy look on part of the finnish. appreciate it. rick

could anyone recommend any luthiers in the nyc area for fretwork/setups/repairs besides evan gluck? i play mostly jazz and looking for extremely fine fretwork/intonation. thanks

You can't find a better man than Evan Gluck. I have met him and played guitars he has built and set up.

You can learn to tweak the intonation yourself. All you need is a good tuner and a screwdriver.
