I have been looking at this machine on and off for a while now. I have been advised to buy a bigger machine for the larger table size, but I am a bit cramped in both space and budget and I continue to look at this as an alternative.

However. This is too big to haul down into my basement shop? For those of you who have one, do you think it is possible / advisable to take it apart enough to get it into my shop in pieces and reassemble it?

I don't know if it is put together so precise that I will never get it back together accurately enough.

Brock...I would be very surprised if the machine couldn't be taken appart, reassemblied and returned to the orignal specs. A simple dial indicator on a magnetic arm should allow you to "tram" all 3 axis and adjust everything until it is aligned. This is fairly common for all machine tools and is very effective.

Be Sure to check the gantry clearance and theZ-axis travel before buying. If you want to carve necks you need enough for the spoilboard, the wood blank, the tool & holder, & the safe clearance. I think this is about 8 inches or so.

The assembly probably isn't a big deal. Just takes time.

I have one of ShopBot's PRS machines and though I have no direct experience of the Buddy, I'm pretty sure this is the only machine they offer pre-assembled. They have tons of experience guiding folks in tool assembly. Though assembling their other tools isn't trivial, it isn't all that hard either, and their customer support is famous for being top notch. Whenever I've had a glitch to solve they've always gone way above and beyond my expectations to help me with it. Since Buddys come assembled they may not have a User's guide for the assembly process, but I bet they have one for their shop use, and would most likely be glad to provide you with a PDF of it to assist your de: and re: assembly.

You should give them a call. They're very friendly and would be straight with you about the level of difficulty.
