I couldn't help but think of the nearby discussions on digitizing and reverse engineering while sitting in the dentist chair this morning being prepped for a molar crown. Part of the process was taking an impression of the tooth exterior which is, of course, old school.
Then, after prepping the tooth by grinding away enough to leave a stump for the crown to attach to, he used a scanner inside my mouth to take pictures from various angles as dictated by the female voice on the PC to which the scanner was attached. This wasn't so bad except he kept pinching my tongue against my teeth with the scanner head. The scan results will be emailed offsite to have the crown made by, I guess, CNC. Or maybe it's some kind of stereolithography process such as 3D printing?
The joy of modern technology!
