My Fadal showed up yesterday and I'm in the process of cleaning off the gunk. As is there's no way the way covers are going to keep the dust out of the ways. I can't see the wipers keeping things clean for long. Do the covers need to be modified or am I worried about nothing?

I can't answer your question directly, Sheldon, but this company is in the way wiper/cover business.
I remember using their products back in the late 60's.

Which model Fadal?
Most of the ones I ran were basically open underneath...

Some wood gunk collects under the covers when it mixes with the waylube, but it really isn't a big deal. The wipers keep the gunk off the ways. If you keep the machine dry, you'll have very little of this going on, and nearly all of it will blow out with compressed air. The only place it really collects is behind the back Y-axis cover.
