Is there a standard amount of overcut to program in for the rebate on an inlay? I'm about to cut a rebate for a rosette, and all of my test cuts so far have been on the super tight side. Tight enough that I'm afraid I may break the pieces getting them in.

For me somewhere around 4 or 5 thou is enough clearance.

It depend on your machine. I'd start at 1:1 and increase the pocket in .001" increments. After you do this a few times you'll get a feel for it. Keep notes.

I've been cutting my pockets with a .003 allowance. Takes a bit of coaxing, but the tight fit is satisfying.

Did this job for a friend recently.

Here's a macro shot showing the fit. African Blackwood in Mahogany.

Thanks for all the input. Ended up using right at .002. Could probably even go a thousandth more, but it's fitting. Nathan, is that glued with CA?
