**** Whoops!! Didn’t mean for this to be in CNC. Is there a moderator who can move this to the general building section? ******** I’m spoiled that at the school they have a large 20” disk sander. But I really think I need one of my own and have limited space (and money, of course). There are some inexpensive 12” Chinese made ones from the usual outlets that I can afford both the money and space. Any experience out there on these? Is that too small for lutherie tasks? I have a 12" Delta which gets used regularly. Only problem is the disk is about 1/8" less than 12" so when I order replacement sanding disks they have to be trimmed (extremely annoying). |

I had a 12” Harbor Freight disk sander years ago that I quickly sold. I could not keep the table square to the disk. It was very hard to adjust and then wouldn’t stay. I replaced it with a Rikon 6x48 belt/10” disk sander that I am very happy with. The 10” disk is large enough that I can sand the mating heel face to the appropriate neck angle. 9” would probably work. 6” is definitely too small. In general, I have found that the major downfall of cheap bench tools is the adjusting mechanisms. For something that I use all the time, it’s worth it to me to get something that is both accurate and easy to use. |
