Hi, Everyone. This little tool is not very sophisticated, because I made it about twenty years ago before I became aware of some of the more subtle aspects of tool making. But it sure does work. I did NOT invent this tool. I found the concept in a windsor chair making article in FINE WOODWORKING. That gentleman made his scraper planes with rounded bottoms for smoothing his chair seats. I concluded that the tool would work great as a flat scraper, too, and it does. I had almost forgotten that I even owned this tool, but found it in a drawer when I was looking for something to flatten a hump in a headstock ramp. It worked great for my purpose. First, a view of the front. I grip the squar-ish body and the horns rest nicely against the heels of my hands. Then a view of the back. A close look just ahead of the left horn will show you the approximate angle I cut between the two body parts. Then a view of the throat. I suspect some of you will want to make much narrower throats. Like I said, I wasn't too sophisticated when I made this. Last, a view of the parts, which will give you an idea of what needs to be cut away from the front half to provide clearance for the shavings. This little thing really does work well. I hope the concept will help and inspire better tool makers than me. Patrick |
