I get asked regularly about this type of headstock on another forum. here's my video on how to execute the slot cutting. Ramping and drilling takes the whole time fram up to 30 minutes with close on 8 minutes of that being very fine hand sanding... |

Just built one of these for my slot head design - WORKED ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANTLY!! What a great design and idea. Took me 3 -4 hours without the jig - 5 minutes with the jig. Again, brilliant!! |

It took a bit to get it just right with the router pattern offset but once complete it works great. Now I can choose almost any slot head design and have them finished in minutes instead of hours. Sweet, and thanks again to Pete for posting this. |

Pete removed all of his tutorial videos. I think he's either selling them now or offering classes. |

Yeah, what a bummer. I wanted to try that one too. Looks like he is offering classes now. I guess, no more milking the cow for free! |

I saw Howlett's video a couple of years ago and this is my adaptation of his routing jig. The dowels are a press fit into the holes so they can be positioned to protrude from both sides of the jig. Disregard the filled in slot on the plywood. False start! The Martin shaped peg head fits this way. Grip the side dowels and the peg head in your vise. Rout the slot with a plunge router and a collar. Tap the dowels through to the other side. Again clamp the dowels and peg head into your vise. And rout the other slot. Produces balanced slots. Remember to drill the side holes for the tuner shafts BEFORE you cut the slots. |

Great demo! Thanks for sharing. Another variation which doesn't depend on the headstock shape: You would have to lay out and drill holes the diameter of the slots at the end of each slot (another simple jig). Use the holes on one side to align index pins of same diameter so that you can cut the other side. Then push the dowels to the opposite side, flip and repeat. You can also add a slot to contour the top of the head and it should be symmetrical by design. |
