I have very little experience but a friend of mine uses mahogany. Says it works really well.

I use 1/4 in. slices of 3/4 boards left over from my banjo rim making. So, I wind up with an assortment of woods - maple, birch, cherry, walnut, mahogany, and some pine. Cheap and disposable when they get too short.

I use whatever scrap is laying around. Most of my sticks are alder. I cut them to 5/16 x 3/4. I tried 1/4 x 1/4 but a lot of them snapped.

Mine are pine from chopped up 2x4s. its cheap so i dont feel bad when i throw a fit and break some. laughing6-hehe

Ash, Oak, Osage Orange, Hickory, Tan Oak, Elm. If air dried and rived they will never break, split, shatter , etc.

Bamboo garden stakes, $5 for a bag of 50. I wrap a bit of cloth tape around the end to stop them sliding.

I am using 1/4" fiberglass rod from Granger Supply. It comes in 10 foot lengths and is pretty inexpensive. I started using wood strips but found each piece had a different compression which would make other bars already in place pop out. I don't have that problem since I started using fiberglass.

It only cost $6 for a 10 foot length so it is cheap. The only issue is it is not coated but a coat of bin sealer took care of that. I then dipped each end into that rubber you coat tool handles in and they are just like real Go-Bars.

I use these 3/16" fiberglass rods I bought years ago from a kite supply site that someone on here recommended. The 3/16" rods work fine. I thhought the 1/4" one sold at home centers for driveway markng and such were to stiff.....Mike
